Winter Diesel Explained

What it is and when your business needs it.

In short
Winter diesel is a specially  blended diesel with a lower cloud point than standard diesel, so it keeps flowing when the temperature drops. In cold conditions the natural waxes in regular diesel can start to solidify and clog filters and fuel lines.

Winter diesel is formulated to resist that, which matters most for machinery, trucks and equipment working through a New Zealand winter. Fuel To Go can supply winter diesel on bulk delivery when youneed it.

What is cloud point, and why does it matter?

Cloud point is the temperature at which the wax in diesel begins to go cloudy and solidify. Below it, those wax crystals can block a fuel filter and stop an engine, usually at the worst possible time on a frosty morning.

Winter diesel has a lower cloud point than standard diesel, so it stays usable in colder conditions. How cold is cold enough depends on your region, your site, and how exposed your tank is overnight.

Who actually needs winter diesel?

Not everyone, but for some operators it is the difference between aworking morning and a stalled one:

•    Farms and rural businesses running tractors, generators and utes in frost-prone areas.

•    Transport operators and contractors starting early in cold regions, especially the central and southern South Island and inland areas.

•    Anyone storing diesel on-site in a tank exposed to overnight cold.

If your machinery has ever been slow or stubborn to start on a cold morning, winter diesel is worth asking about.

When should I switch to winter diesel?

Through the colder months, when overnight temperatures regularly drop. The right timing depends on your region and how exposed your site is.

The simplest approach is to mention it when you place a bulk order in autumn and winter, and the Customer Service team will let you know what is available in your area.

Does winter diesel cost more or work differently?

It is still diesel, and your engine runs on it exactly as normal. The only thing you need to do is ask for it when you order, so the team can arrange the right blend for the conditions. It is worth asking about availability and pricing for your area at the same time.

Frequently asked questions

What is winter diesel?
A diesel blend with a lower cloud point than standard diesel, formulated to keep flowing in cold weather so wax does not solidify and block your fuel system.

Does Fuel To Go deliver winter diesel?
Yes. Winter diesel can be delivered on bulk orders. Ask the Customer Service team whether it is available in your area when you place your order.

Can regular diesel gel in a New Zealand winter?
In cold, frost-prone areas, yes. The waxes in standard diesel can solidify below its cloud point, which is exactly what winter diesel is designed to prevent.
